Description
Up for auction is a lot of two vintage Hawaiian postcards from the divided back era, circa 1907-1915. Both postcards are unaddressed and unstamped. They measure about 5 7/16 in width by 3 3/8 inches in height. Both postcards were published by the “Hawaii & South Seas Curio Co., Honolulu.” In one area adjacent to the “published by” statement, they are
numbered “83” for the Kilauea Volcano and “157” for Cocoanut Island. In another area at the back top, they are numbered “A-15753” (Kilauea) and “A-5926.”
The “Cocoanut Island, Hawaii” postcard states “Cocoanut Island which is situated in the Bay of Hilo, Hawaii is a favorite resort for the people of that city.”
The postcard of the Kilauea volcano is labeled as “C.T. Photochrom.”
According to Internet sources, “the craze for collecting photochrom postcards ended after World War I.”
The front of the Cocoanut Island postcard is in good condition but with some spots of loss of color around the edges and corners. The back has some minor yellowing from age and there is a very minor crinkle on the bottom left corner.
The front of the “Volcano of Kilauea, Hawaii” is also in good condition but with some spots of loss of color on the corners and edges. The back is in good shape with some yellowing from age and a slight crinkle on the bottom left corner.
Please see photos for exact conditions.
By the way, photochrom is a process for producing a
colorized
image from a black-and-white
photographic negative via a direct photographic transfer of a negative onto
a
lithographic
printing plate.
These two postcards belonged to a great uncle. Now it is time to sell them to a deserving buyer, so I can clean out my closets…two items at a time.
