Columbia PIctures Original One-Sheet Poster (27x41), linen-backed, for the Norman Z. McLeod directed musical comedy PENNIES FROM HEAVEN (1936) starring Bing Crosby, Madge Evans, Louis Armstrong, Edith Fellows, Donald Meek, John Gallaudet, William Stack, Nana Bryant, Tom Dugan, George Chandler and Nydia Westman. The film featured several songs by Arthur Johnston and Johnny Burke, the most famous of which was the title song, sung by Crosby. It would become a classic in the Crosby discography, one of the most famous songs from the depression era. The film did not get particularly good notices, but Bing Crosby was the biggest star at Paramount and a cash cow for the studio. The poster speaks of the carnival setting of the movie and the optimism that was Bing Crosby's stock in trade. Crosby insisted that Louis Armstrong appear in the movie, and he did with his band. That band included Lionel Hampton, and you see him briefly in the film.
